The discourse on shifting social norms for gender justice is gaining momentum. There is a growing appreciation of the fact that there are many social norms that must be shifted for adolescent girls and young women to flourish. This chapter reviews the extant scholarly literature with a key focus on the perceived role of faith actors in contributing towards the shifting of social norms that are implicated in sexual and gender-based violence in Africa. The chapter addresses this theme in the context of the need for faith actors to ensure the safeguarding of adolescent girls and young women. The net effect has been that many social norms have stifled the health and well-being of adolescent girls and young women. The chapter is located within the context of Sustainable Development Goal 5, “Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls,” and the African Union’s Aspiration 6 on gender justice. Overall, the chapter highlights the strategic role that faith actors can play (and others are playing) in shifting social norms for the flourishing of adolescent girls and young women.
