Process Integration Approaches Applied to Microalgal Pigments Production
摘要
In recent years, microalgae have been highlighted as a promising renewable feedstock for the production of bioenergy, biofuels, as well as value-added products. Among the value-added products, pigments stand out due to market growth forecasts, driven by the need for sustainable processes. Despite all the pigments that can be obtained from microalgae, the profitability of the production processes remains a challenge. To overcome this problem, pigment production from microalgae must be integrated with other processes; this will allow to increase the products obtained, and therefore the economic viability of the production. This integration can be done through a complete biorefinery processing scheme or by sharing the production infrastructure with other industries, such as wastewater treatment. Therefore, this chapter presents a review of the reported studies where the integration of pigment production processes from microalgae is proposed. Some future trends related to integrated pigment production processes are also discussed.
