Two Worlds in Conflict
摘要
The manifest image represents the world as it appears to human beings in their everyday experiences and perceptions. This concept contrast with the scientific image, which represents the world as described by scientific theories, often revealing aspects of reality not accessible through ordinary perception. Standard Quinean metaphysics prioritises the scientific image over the manifest image—a stance that is often seen as reflecting the contemporary zeitgeist, which treats the sciences as the ultimate arbiters of truth and reality. The two images are said to clash with one another and it is argued that many philosophical debates are conducted from within the manifest image but are difficult to interpret from the scientific image. This is demonstrated by engaging with various metaphysical questions.
