Discovering Grouping Principles
摘要
Gestalt psychology was one of the first movements that opposed the standard view in psychology and the cognitive sciences and observed that the brain significantly shapes the data we receive through our senses. Thinking of the brain as the constructor of our structural experiences, the movement is closely connected to idealistic thought. The movement was not successful, however, as it failed to offer precise computational principles and could not identify the neural underpinning of their theories. However, while the standard realist approach to grouping principles manages to give some account for how our visual ontology gets its structure, it is also very limited in its explanatory power.
