A great facilitator has a transformative impact on students’ learning. A PBL facilitator conducts small-group learning in problem-based learning (PBL) courses. The role of a facilitator in small group learning is more sophisticated and nuanced than giving a traditional lecture in front of a classroom. Facilitators who guide small group learning transform their role from the ‘sage on the stage’ to a ‘guide on the side,’ which takes time, effort, and practice to master. Developing skilled facilitators requires long-term, systemic training and support plan.
