By the age of 16, Sydney was diagnosed with metabolic syndrome: hypertension, diabetes (A1C 10), elevated triglycerides, elevated LDL, dyspnea, and congestive heart failure. His EF was 30%. His BMI was 52. A surgical consult emphasized a reduction of weight to improve his EF, A1C, and successful blood pressure control. Only after these metrics were met, a sleeve gastrectomy would be considered. While he lost weight initially, he ballooned back up to 407 pounds. The surgeon knew that any weight loss was not sustainable and gave a date for surgery. There were several complications along the path: DVT, hypercoagulation leading to a CVA, and an airway that was almost lost. Nothing would work until he changed his entire perspective on stress eating.
