Scientific knowledge is increasingly interconnected with social life; without scientific observation, global challenges such as anthropogenic climate change or the loss of biodiversity would hardly, if at all, have become the subject of political (generally: public) discourse. However, scientific knowledge is also increasingly tied into everyday life. This is particularly evident in the use of devices without which the organization of everyday life would hardly be possible today, such as smartphones or laptops. Likewise, hardly any social relationship escapes scientific observation—with observation results then being referred back to society through public dissemination, through which they can in turn modify social relationships (among many: Latour, 1993; Luhmann, 1990; Weingart et al., 2008). Science has become an omnipresent component of contemporary societies in most parts of the world (albeit with varying degrees of intensity).
