Noninvasive ventilation (NIV) is an essential respiratory support method commonly used in the intensive care unit (ICU) and emergency care, delivering artificial ventilation without endotracheal intubation. However, NIV produces aerosols and is recognized as an aerosol-generating procedure (AGP) posing a heightened risk of respiratory infection transmission to healthcare workers due to aerosol spread and droplet dispersion. NIV techniques including continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), bilevel positive airway pressure (BiPAP), and high-frequency oxygen ventilation (HFOV) can generate infectious particles when using high pressures or mask designs prone to leakage. To prevent transmission of droplets, advancement in NIV mask design and further research on aerosol dispersal are crucial to balance infection control in healthcare settings.
