Mathematical Modeling in the Context of Out-of-School Learning: Exploring the Potential of Universities
摘要
Universities hold significant potential for implementing mathematical modeling in out-of-school learning environments. However, the extent to which this potential is harnessed in the context of school mathematics remains unclear. This chapter conceptualizes the use of mathematical modeling in university-based out-of-school learning settings and presents three illustrative activities. These activities enable students to interact with research facilities and laboratory environments in different faculties of universities. We designed the activities to offer students opportunities to acquire informal knowledge through authentic, discipline-specific experiences and to transform this knowledge into mathematical models using a technology-supported approach. This approach strengthens the connection between theoretical knowledge and practical application, supporting students in experiencing mathematics in meaningful and real-life contexts.
