There are two standard operative approaches to almost all surgical thyroid disease: total thyroidectomy (TT) and thyroid lobectomy (TL). Now that oncologic outcomes for TT and TL are proven to be similar for low to intermediate-risk thyroid malignancy and gross improvement of symptoms are equivalent for patients with benign disease, individualized patient care focuses on optimization of quality of life (QOL). Although thyroid cancer has an excellent prognosis, studies have suggested that QOL after thyroid surgery is poorer than with other cancers and may be impacted by the extent of surgery. Discussion of these considerations and more formal navigation may help in setting expectations, decision making, and optimizing overall health-related QOL.
