This chapter explores the interplay between autonomy, solidarity, rationality, and pluralism as essential democratic principles. It analyzes how extreme ideologies often disregard these principles, undermining civic life. The delicate balance between autonomy and solidarity is examined through examples like Covid-19 policies and immigration, emphasizing the need to avoid both a “law of the jungle” and the suppression of individual agency. The tension between rationality and pluralism is highlighted, cautioning against both hegemonic tunnel vision and post-truth relativism. The chapter advocates for approaching these tensions in terms of lifelong learning. The four principles work together to foster nuanced engagement with diverse perspectives and the co-creation of just, equitable, and also sustainable communities.
