This chapter emphasizes and explores how the democratic principles of autonomy, solidarity, rationality, and pluralism can and should guide civic interactions. It shows that structural support, such as through group norms, can be helpful in using these principles to guide concrete action. The chapter provides practical examples for facilitating the creation of group norms. Finally, the chapter discusses how, in our efforts to promote learning and change, we can inadvertently undermine the civic development of our students. Hence, an ethics of civic education requires that the methods of education are consistent with democratic principles and values.
