Microalgae is one of the most potential biological resources and the fastest growing photosynthetic organisms in the world. These microorganisms are rich in highly valuable materials, such as proteins, peptides, lipids, and natural pigments. Natural pigments from microalgae have been shown to possess many benefits for human health, nutrition, and beauty. This contribution describes the potential applications of microalgal pigments such as chlorophyll, carotenoids, and phycobiliproteins in cosmetics and cosmeceuticals. Potential health benefits as well as applications of microalgal pigments in cosmetic and cosmeceutical applications were discussed. Finally, the industrial prospects and challenges of microalgal pigments in cosmetics are overviewed.
