In this chapter I introduce environmental ethics and make a brief overview of the field. In environmental ethics, not only individuals count, but also other levels such as ecosystems and species might count. Discussions on values are common, and I will go through the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) analysis of instrumental, intrinsic, and relational values. Then, an in-depth analysis of Aldo Leopold’s Land Ethic follows, which ends in a proposal of a Land Ethic Decision Model which I apply on the three ethical cases that are used in the book.
