Combined Axillary and Suprascapular Block
摘要
The combined axillary and suprascapular nerve block, or “shoulder block,” is a regional anaesthesia technique for postoperative analgesia following shoulder surgery. The suprascapular nerve (SSN) originates from the C5–C6 nerve roots, providing 60–70% of sensory innervation to the shoulder joint, while the axillary nerve (AN), a branch of the posterior cord, supplies 25–30% of sensation. Blocking both nerves effectively reduces pain while minimizing the risk of phrenic nerve palsy seen with interscalene blocks. The posterior and anterior approaches to the SSN and ultrasound-guided axillary nerve blockade ensure precise local anaesthetic deposition, improving block efficacy and reducing complications such as vascular puncture and pneumothorax.
