Axillary Block
摘要
The axillary block is a safe and effective regional anaesthesia technique for forearm and hand surgery, providing anaesthesia and postoperative analgesia while avoiding complications associated with more proximal brachial plexus blocks. It targets the median, ulnar, radial, and musculocutaneous nerves as they course through the axilla. Ultrasound-guided techniques improve accuracy by visualizing the axillary artery and surrounding nerves, reducing the risk of vascular puncture. Advantages of axillary approach to brachial plexus include minimal respiratory effects and the ability to apply direct compression in case of bleeding. Optimal analgesia requires 3–5 mL per nerve with local anaesthetic choice depending on procedural duration. Continuous catheter techniques offer prolonged analgesia for extensive procedures.
