The Theatre of the People
摘要
Throughout Europe in the nineteenth century, popular puppet theatres proliferated and performed a wide range of theatrical genres. Drawing on a large number of unpublished or lesser-known sources, this chapter compares examples (mostly anonymous) of plays from the main repertoire categories. It begins with Nativity plays from regional traditions in countries such as Portugal, Spain, Belgium, and France, as well as plays about the lives of saints, such as Genevieve of Brabant and St Anthony the Great. It then moves on to adaptations of the legends of Robert the Devil, Faust, and Don Juan. Next, it highlights specific genres of puppet and marionette theatre, such as historical scenes, military plays, and dramas based on popular news stories. The chapter concludes with an examination of serial performances of epics and novels in Belgium and Sicily.
