Street Theatres: Sketches of Humanity
摘要
This chapter explores puppet theatre as a form of popular entertainment performed in the streets and fairground booths. It explores the variety of shows and their different devices before focusing on glove puppet performances and their repertoires. The chapter emphasises the importance of comical plays and highlights their similarities throughout Europe. Analysis of textual and iconographical sources suggests that travelling performers shared a repertoire of basic ‘routines’ that circulated across different countries. These routines formed the basis of the performances, which were structured using dramatic modules that could be combined, extended, or condensed according to the context. Moreover, the protagonist (Pulcinella, Polichinelle, Punch, or Hanswurst) could easily adapt their name and appearance to each local context. The chapter concludes with exploring the challenges involved in transcribing oral performances for the written page.
