In this chapter we shall study some properties of an idealized thermal neutron spectrum in which the neutrons have a true equilibrium distribution with the moderator. Then we provide an overview of the production of neutrons by neutron induced fission. The number of neutrons emitted by fission, the share between prompt and delayed neutrons, and the prompt-neutron spectrum which is the continuous distribution of energies of prompt neutrons are presented.
