This chapter addresses the inventive mind, using the Ideas, Suggestions and Inventions Committee to explore the notion of invention and its relationship to science and technology. By considering the various ideas submitted to the Committee—set up by the Union Defence Force—it is possible to gain insight into the ways in which South Africans perceived both the concepts of invention and innovation as well as how they conceived of the war effort and their role in it. Inventions ranged from the credulous to the credible and the notion of invention itself is historicized and contextualized to demonstrate the ways in which the ideas submitted as well as prospective inventors both mirrored and challenged the inequalities and tensions in a country at war, and one divided by racial distinction and ideology. The chapter also considers inventions in both Britain and other Dominions to address the ways in which South Africa was both influenced by and engaged with similar Allied wartime committees.
