Why Are Accessibility App Reviews Rare? Exploring Motivations, Barriers and Opportunities Among Users with Disabilities
摘要
Mobile app store user reviews, a form of electronic word-of-mouth (eWOM), are crucial for developers and organizations aiming to refine their products, maintain competitiveness, and ensure client satisfaction. Although app reviews touch upon various quality aspects, researchers identify a limited reporting of accessibility issues. Given that most apps face accessibility challenges and that reviews are key in app development, the low volume of reviews focusing on accessibility could hinder improvements in this area. This study examines the underrepresentation of feedback from users with disabilities regarding app accessibility. Specifically, we surveyed 104 users with disabilities to identify their motivations and obstacles in eWOM participation and the factors that might boost their involvement. Our results reveal that users are motivated by a desire to drive app enhancements and help others, while barriers include doubts about feedback effectiveness, technical obstacles, and a lack of interest. Furthermore, feedback from organizations, financial incentives, and diverse feedback mechanisms could potentially increase user participation.
