This chapter situates the materialised digital comic as a historical object. It begins by considering the different factors that determine the history of the digital when it is understood in terms of the key material elements presented in this book: identifier, file type, software, firmware, hardware and producers/readers. The chapter considers four currents evident in the history or historicising of digital comics: creation, maintenance, movement and destruction. The chapter’s discussion of creation recognises the diversity of creative practices and narrows its focus to two major areas: flattening and compression. Its consideration of maintenance examines backups and returns to the question of compatibility that was discussed in sociocultural terms in Chapter 4, this time considering it as a historical process. The discussion of movement considers the ideas of accrual and depletion, before the final section of the chapter deals with destruction in the digital context.

摘要
