Economics
摘要
This chapter explores the implications of a materiality-driven understanding of digital comics in terms of the economics of the field. The chapter begins by emphasising the importance of economics to the digital realm: unlike printed comics, continuous economic input is required to ensure the continued survival of digital works. A summary of approaches to comics’ economics is presented, before the chapter turns its focus to the question of ownership. Three models of ownership are presented: ownership, access and owned access. Each model is explained in detail. Next, the chapter outlines five costs and nine risks that can be observed in digital comics. Finally, the chapter outlines how each of the three models interacts with the costs and risks and demonstrates that each model has different profiles that impact meaningfully on user experiences.
