This chapter establishes the foundations of a material approach to digital comics. The chapter begins by considering what digital comics are, not in terms of definition but in their physical composition. An approach loosely termed ‘technological materialism’ is explored, through which the materiality of the digital is recognised in imprecise terms with reference to categories such as ‘tablet computers’, which do not fully capture the complexity of systems. Next, the concept of the edition is considered to see how this might enable us to understand digital works, and the relationship between print and digital works is discussed. This comparison underpins a rethinking of the concept of the edition, which shows that the edition is not, ultimately, a satisfactory means for working with digital comics’ diverse materialities.

摘要
