From Process Designers to AI Facilitators: The Transformative Impact of Agentic AI on Business Process Managers
摘要
The increasing integration of agentic Artificial Intelligence (AI) – autonomous, adaptive AI systems – is fundamentally changing the role of business process managers (BPMs) in organizations. While BPMs have traditionally been responsible for modelling and standardizing processes, they are increasingly becoming facilitators of hybrid human-AI interactions. This paper analyses the impact on BPMs’ tasks and competency requirements using a framework of five archetypes of human-AI hybrids. Our findings suggest that future BPMs will not only need to develop technical and methodological knowledge, but also skills in human-AI collaboration and ethical AI management. We provide a first conceptual classification of the changing role of BPMs in the context of the use of agentic AI and thus lay a foundation for empirical research to further deepen our understanding of the emerging human-AI hybrid reality of the future enterprise.
