There are many studies suggesting that e-cigarette smoking, similar to combustion cigarette smoking, can precipitate esophageal and gastrointestinal disorders. Commonly reported symptoms include heartburn and stomach ache, which were attributed to inflammatory changes in the esophagus. There are no studies on the pathophysiology of GI symptoms in e-cigarette users; however, based on the numerous reports on combustion cigarette use, one can extrapolate that these can be secondary to increased gastric acidity and alteration in lower esophageal sphincter dysfunction. Future investigations on the impact of e-cigarette use on gastrointestinal function are needed.
