Immersive CNC Lathe Operation Training: A Virtual Reality Approach for Education
摘要
The growing demand for skilled CNC machine operators highlights the need for effective and accessible training solutions, but traditional education faces challenges due to the high cost of equipment, limited machine availability, and safety concerns. This study aims to address these issues by developing a virtual reality (VR) application designed to provide students with interactive learning experience for CNC lathe operations. By creating a highly realistic VR environment, students can familiarize themselves with essential tasks, such as workpiece setup and program initiation, without the constraints of physical equipment. The VR scene features a detailed replica of a CNC lathe machine, developed using SolidWorks for modeling, Blender for texturing, and Unity for implementation. A user evaluation involving 22 students revealed positive results, with majority of the students exhibiting enhanced focus on learning basic CNC operation skills. However, students also emphasized the need for clearer instructional guidance, such as directional arrows or textboxes, to enhance usability. The application demonstrates significant potential for supplementing traditional CNC education by offering an immersive, cost-effective, and scalable training tool. This work contributes both academically and practically to improving student engagement and accessibility in CNC machining education.
