This short, reflective chapter uses an anecdote from an ecumenical event to illustrate the profound disconnect between the progressive, “ecumenical world” and the reality of Brazilian evangelicalism. The event’s theme is the fight against “fundamentalism,” yet the program explicitly excludes any cultural or religious expression of evangelicalism, the very group being discussed and demonized. The central irony is revealed when the author discovers that the kitchen staff, whose labor makes the event possible, are themselves black evangelical women. The chapter highlights a deep-seated hypocrisy within progressive circles, which claim to fight for inclusion while creating an “other” to be barred. It suggests that the ecumenical movement, having lost its original transformative goal, now unites merely to stop things from getting worse, failing to recognize the lived experiences and presence of the very people it critiques.
