Plants, Poetry, and Painting: A Biocultural Encounter with the Chinese Four Gentlemen
摘要
Current environmental degradation and the classroom-centric approach to art education raise significant pedagogical challenges. As art educators concerned with Chinese traditions, we aim to explore the connection between art and education regarding the harmonious relationship between humans and nature. Our study focuses on the integration of biocultural conservation, restoration, and communication into art education. In Chinese traditions such as Confucianism and Taoism, the natural environment is considered the source of truth. It symbolizes the unity of Heaven and humankind. Drawing from this philosophy, we aim to reconnect students with the natural environment by cultivating Chinese aesthetics and worldview through plants-inspired art education. We envision that art classes in primary and secondary schools can play a relevant role for appreciating biocultural heritage. The Chinese art concept of the “Four Gentlemen” (四君子) was adopted to convey Chinese ethical values, which could broaden and enrich current approaches to biocultural conservation, restoration, and communication.
