Segmentation is used to extract objects from images, i. e. to identify which pixels belong to which objects. Now we can perform the next step and analyze the shape of the objects. In this chapter, we first discuss a class of neighborhood operations, the morphological operators for binary images, which can be used to modify and analyze the shape of objects (Section 18.2 to 18.4).
