Reflecting on the complexities and opportunities of Africa’s urban transitions, this volume addresses nuances of urban Africa, trends, and outlook at a time of a dynamic global system. The book provides a rich tapestry of insights into the forces shaping the continent’s urban future as well as the opportunities and complexities of urban transitions in Africa because the continent is fast urbanizing, registering high economic growth but still entangled in high inequalities, multi-dimensional deprivation, and historically rooted dependencies despite its natural wealth. The book frames urban transitions as dynamic and complex processes shaped by various social, political, economic, and environmental factors. In this book, the process of transition is used to refer to the shifts in urban management and development across the continent, including the diversity of technologies, citizen agency, modalities of financing, and recentering people to build equitable cities that can spur inclusive, sustainable, and resilient cities. The time for a fast-paced urban transition on the African continent is now. This is due to the current global crises of increasing impacts of climate change, geopolitical misalignments, increasing populism in Europe and America, leading to uncertainties for long-standing development aid and support, as well as a global imperative for energy transition. With considerable deposits of critical minerals, Africa should intentionally devise pathways to lead the energy transition by adding value to critical minerals, boosting trade on the African continent, and devising means for growth of continental capital mobilization to finance industrial development and the much-needed infrastructure, including in urban areas. The summaries below synthesize actionable strategies, pathways, and levers for inclusive, resilient urban transition in Africa. We cite cases in peer-reviewed literature that deepen the discussion of actionable strategies that demonstrate the pathways to urban transition in Africa.
