If we look around the world carefully, seeing the race phenomenon everywhere should remind us that, as racism was a zeitgeist in the past and it is a zeitgeist in the present—as it was in the past, so it is in the present. While in the present anti-Black racism manifests in ongoing racism, in the past it manifested in slavery, colonialism and apartheid. In view of the above, the key concepts in this book are slavery, colonialism, apartheid and racism. So, this chapter and the next chapter are devoted to explaining my conceptualizations of these key concepts. This chapter explains the concepts of slavery, colonialism and apartheid while the explanation of the concept of racism is deferred until the next chapter. This chapter begins with the explanation of the concepts of slavery, colonialism and apartheid because in this book they precede the concept of racism in a lexical order.
