Community-Based Disaster Management to Mitigate Riverbank Erosion in Bangladesh

Community-Based Disaster Management has been recognized as one of the most effective approaches in dealing with disaster risk reduction and natural disasters. As a low-lying country, Bangladesh faces various kinds of natural and manmade disasters, and riverbank erosion poses significant environmental, social, and economic threats. To achieve sustainable development and reduce the long-term harmful impacts of erosion, CBDM approaches can secure practicable outcomes. This chapter aims to determine the effectiveness of CBDM approaches to mitigate riverbank erosion and its consequences, studying selective areas of Tangail and Sirajganj districts in Bangladesh. Primary data were collected through qualitative methods, including FGD, KII, and IDI, to gather a comprehensive and nuanced understanding of community engagement with the issue and the actual scenario of combating riverbank erosion. The chapter finds that despite communication gaps with the authorities, lack of awareness programs, adequate funding, transparency, accountability of the responsible entities, dissatisfaction in relief distribution, etc., local communities mostly confront the disastrous damages by exerting their own. Authoritative actions are rarely effective, creating a massive demand for sustainable solutions.
