The advent of high performance computing led to the development and application of Direct Numerical Simulation and Large Eddy Simulation to a wide range problems in fluid dynamics. The chapter presents an extensive chronological survey of results for incompressible and compressible turbulent flow over rough walls for pipe flow and boundary layers. Comparison with experimental data demonstrates the high level of accuracy achieved, and further analysis of the flowfields yields important new knowledge regarding the flowfield structure.
