Minimally Invasive Approaches: The Mini-pterional

Minipterional craniotomy is a less-invasive modification of the traditional pterional approach. The device is designed to provide adequate exposure to lesions in the anterior and middle cranial fossae while minimizing soft tissue disruption. This technique involves a smaller incision and craniotomy, thereby reducing operative time, blood loss, and postoperative complications, such as temporal muscle atrophy. It is particularly useful for accessing aneurysms in the anterior circulation, tumors of the parasellar and suprasellar regions, and other deep-seated intracranial pathologies. By preserving more of the temporalis muscle and utilizing optimal exposure principles, the mini-pterional approach enhances recovery and cosmetic outcomes, making it a preferred option in select neurosurgical cases [1–3].
