This chapter explores the traditional gravity-fed irrigation channels locally known as Kuhl/Kuhal/Kul. These dendritic gravity-driven systems were constructed to nourish farms during dry season and also in the wet season when prolonged dry spells prevail in the Kangra Valley. The Kuhl system has played a pivotal role in enhancing crop productivity, supporting local businesses, and sustaining rural livelihoods. The community-built and managed system has provided water for nourishing over thousands of hectares of land in the command areas, set a best model of community-managed natural resources, despite many challenges. The chapter underscores the significance of Kuhls in boosting agricultural productivity and discusses challenges in managing the traditional system, which once supported valley dwellers for many years.
