The costs of antimicrobial resistance developed in the livestock sector and spreading form there to human health care is considerable. Nowadays this problem is usually approached for the so-called One-Health perspective. Development of resistance is mostly the consequence of exposure to non-lethal concentrations of antibiotics, both when resistance genes on plasmids are involved and when resistance is induced de novo. Detailed analysis of the data on veterinary usage of antibiotics and prevalence of resistance suggest that the reduction of usage has caused a decrease of the percentage of resistance bacteria. Specific forms of resistance, such as multi-resistance and carbapenem resistance, still form a major threat for public health. Once resistance has been selected for in the veterinary sector, it is not effective to try to prevent it from reaching human health care. Reducing development of resistance at the source is more efficient.
