Alfred N. Hunt’s standard monograph’s interpretation assumed that Southern Democratic opinion uniformly opposed the Haitian Revolution. However, Hunt provided little evidence, mostly from South Carolina, that this was the case throughout the South. The Richmond Enquirer’s acceptance of Haiti’s Revolution and Haitian annexation of Santo Domingo suggests that Hunt’s view of the Federalist and Democratic parties’ stance on Haiti merits increased investigation. Ritchie ultimately considered the Haitian Revolution, particularly as it stabilized under Boyer, a justifiable occurrence. He had an underlying appreciation that the revolutionaries fought only for their freedom.
