Vivekananda’s Metaphysical Justification of Inequality
摘要
Vivekananda’s metaphysical justification of inequality refers to his view that a superior philosophical perspective, as found in the Vedas, enables us to coexist and be kind to one another despite our differences in status. For Vivekananda, the Vedas professed many truths. The highest truth was that reality was undifferentiated and that no one was superior or inferior to another. From a lower spiritual perspective, the world was differentiated and uneven. The highest spiritual perspective harmonized the lower ones, rather than denouncing them, because it recognized that every religion or spiritual practice ultimately led to the same goal. Vivekananda held that Vedantic Hinduism was superior to the lower, dualistic religions such as Islam and Christianity because it harmonized diverse spiritual and philosophical views, offering a more comprehensive picture of reality. The world of differences was just as real as the undifferentiated realm, and we needed to consider both for a well-balanced spiritual and social perspective.
