摘要

Although populations of alfalfa have adapted to survive in a variety of harsh settings, they have not been widely used in breeding efforts until recently. Recent developments in next-generation sequencing offer a fresh approach to increase the profitability of alfalfa breeding. More potent platforms have been explored in conjunction with genome-wide association studies (GWAS) and genomic selection (GS). Along with the genetic engineering techniques that entail transferring one or more novel or valuable genes into alfalfa. In alfalfa, single or multiple-target gene editing has been accomplished using CRISPR/Cas9-based gene editing. This chapter highlights the latest developments in alfalfa improvement and the ways that recent research on this significant forage crop has been made possible by the availability of biotechnology and genomics methods.
