Myths and Misconceptions on Gender-Based Violence

Myths and misconceptions about gender-based violence can promote unfavourable attitudes and behaviours that can hinder health communication efforts to effectively confront and prevent the scourge. It is critical to debunk these myths and misconceptions to promote a more practical knowledge of gender-based violence to create a society that is safer and more just for everyone. This chapter addresses myths and misconceptions about gender-based violence. The chapter starts by discussing common myths and misconceptions about gender-based violence followed by debunk of these myths and misconceptions. The chapter then discusses strategies for debunking myths and misconceptions about gender-based violence. The second last part discusses the role of health communication in debunking myths and misconceptions followed by the last part on the role of health communication in promoting gender equality in the prevention of gender-based violence.
