Nature writing is multi-generic and heterogeneous in the genres of letter, memoir, essay, story, and journal. Nature writing creates accounts in these genres about nature at home or away with the writer either going on excursions by foot or boat to exotic places away from home in search of people, plants, and animals or sauntering in their home place in appreciation of local places, people, plants, and animals. White created the genre of nature writing about the home place, its plants, and animals; Thoreau perfected it about home and away. Travelling by boat up and down the Concord and Merrimack Rivers and recounted in his first book, he mixed travel and nature writing and other modes and genres. Living in Walden Woods by Walden Pond he was deeply sensitive to local place and expressive of the seasons, and recounted this lived experience in Walden. It is a special case standing outside the boundaries of genre (as Thoreau aimed to do). Walden founded the genre of American nature writing and, at the same time and in the same place, dissolved it into wild writing, memoir, satire, and mystical saint’s life without subscribing to any one particular religious or spiritual tradition.
