Drawing on the work of Mikhail Bakhtin (1895–1975), nature writing is both prosaic and poetic—it is written in poetic prose about the prosaic, the everyday, and the ordinary about extraordinary nature in poetic language. Thoreau’s Walden is exemplary in all these regards, especially in his recount of building his own house and making his home in the bioregion of Walden Woods by Walden Pond. The prosaic practice of house-building in a natural setting is expressed in poetic prose. Ordinary, everyday life is elevated to the level of the extraordinary life of nature, and extraordinary nature is associated with ordinary, everyday life. Nature is ordinary and extraordinary. Nature is part and parcel of ordinary, everyday life. This is a typical and defining feature of Thoreau’s writing. Prose and poetry, everyday life and nature, also come together for Thoreau in walking and writing. Walking is prosaic, a practice of everyday life. Thoreau is famous as a walker, a chronicler of his own walking, and a philosopher of walking in the country. Writing and walking go hand-in-hand, foot-by-foot. As Thoreau walked, so he wrote and vice versa. Walking and thinking for Thoreau also went in step and in time with each other.
