Nature writing is an enduring marketing category in the catalogues of some publishers, on the shelves of some bookshops, and in the search engines of some online booksellers, while nature everywhere is being destroyed. Nature writing is often conflated or confused with natural history. Publishers, bookshops, and booksellers often lump them together. Natural history is a scientific discourse that classifies the genus and species of plants and animals in a taxonomic system. It produces abstract knowledge that exercises power over nature. It sets up a position of mastery for the subject of the naturalist and scientist to take in relation to the objects of nature. It is an institutionalized practice of seeing, stating, and meaning-making. By contrast, nature writing engages in an intersubjective relationship in mutuality with nature. Nature writing is the creative tracing in poetic prose or prose poetry of the bodily and sensory enjoyment of both the processes and places of nature in the broad sense of the processes and places of land, air, and water, including their plants and animals (including humans), the provision of life-giving air and energy, the temporal rhythms of the day and the seasons, and the aerial vagaries of the weather and climate.
