The state of Ohio in the United States has had a long history of excellence with respect to vocational education (now known as career and technical education). The state has a well-developed and articulated delivery system that is accessible to all residents of the state. The system begins at the middle school grades with introductory courses, then into high schools and career centers which provide programing for workplace entry as well as preparation for postsecondary education. Community colleges offer the opportunity for students to build on their high school training in preparation for the workplace or entry into university studies. Into adulthood, further education and training is available through Ohio’s Technical Centers and registered apprenticeship programs, while second chance institutions and nonprofit organizations can provide a new start for those individuals who need them. Cooperation and collaboration between all institutional levels is a focal point of the system, as clear paths exist to enter and exit at any level throughout a student’s education and training journey.
