The monograph begins by presenting and contextualizing the archival material with a brief discussion on nineteenth-century Latin American popular and working-class writing. This section is followed by a review of the historiographical traditions which have studied the early Chilean working-class press. It argues that the historiographical approach to the material has resulted either in studies that overlook issues of gender in early Chilean working-class writing or in works which engage with gender solely from a social perspective. This overview aims to show that in either case the intrinsic complicity between patriarchy and working-class thought is not addressed. This discussion allows to defend the distinctiveness, relevance, and originality of studying Latin American working-class press from a political philosophy approach informed by feminist critique and inspired by Jacques Derrida’s deconstruction.
