This chapter offers a teaching approach that builds on the learners’ past, present and future. This process will entail teachers in honouring their students’ experiences and assumptions by encouraging them to express their own voice in the current classroom context and helping them to determine how they want to own and employ the additional language. This involves learners in acknowledging and being aware of their own values, attitudes and histories and how they want to position themselves in the additional language. The role of the teacher is to ‘translate’ learner understandings, hopes and aspirations garnered from their first language/culture resources and emerging experiences with additional language/culture resources in order to help them construct successful and meaningful communication. Languaculture, transpragmatics and critical interactional ability allow language learners to make sense of additional-language contexts and determine levels of participation in ongoing situations and future interactional and transactional encounters. More importantly, it helps learners determine what they want to achieve with interaction and gives them the means to accomplish this.
