This chapter introduces the Inclusion by DesignInclusion by Design (IbDInclusion by Design) framework and sets the stage for a transformative approach to inclusive backward curriculum planningCurriculum planning. IbDInclusion by Design moves away from the traditional one-size-fits-all approach to teaching, and instead promotes a proactiveProactive, inclusive approach to teaching and learning that considers student diversityStudent diversity from the very outset of the planning process. This chapter outlines the research base supporting IbDInclusion by Design and calls for a rethinking of planning methods to ensure that all students are provided the opportunity to succeed, regardless of the diversityStudent diversity they bring to the classroom.
