This chapter turns to two famous medieval romances, Gottfried von Strassburg’s “Tristan” and the anonymous Middle English “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.” In both texts we find a tension between conscience and desire, honor and love which is never resolved but which assumes the form of misogynistic aggression.
