This chapter presents a novel viewpoint on the relation between simulation and autonomy, in which simulation is a tool for learning. Section 1 describes the main methods used to simulate the properties of deformable objects, such as those in anatomical environments. Section 2 introduces the use of simulation to generate data for machine learning methods. Section 3 summarizes the methods described in the chapter and is the introduction to the applications of simulations described in the following chapters.
